NEW RULES:
There is an entire book in devolvement about magic in this setting, called Ancient Magic. For now, these points sum up a few of the most important changes that are coming in that book:
- No Classifications. While the core rules have arcane and divine spells, and the revised edition from WotC includes another classification called ‘primal’, the AvV setting does away with this concept. All magic is part of the same pool of resources. Priestesses, sorceress, witches, and wizards might cast any spell. Indeed, in some cultures the terms ‘mage’ and ‘priest’ are interchangeable. The distinction between arcane and divine magic is a cultural construct that developed in the Middle Ages and only existed in a very nascent form in ancient times. Because of this, you may see characters and creatures in this setting with access to spells they wouldn’t normally have under standard 5e rules.
- Focus Items. Some spells have focus items. These may be worn or carried by the spell’s target, or they may be placed in an area where the spell is to take effect. Focus items are not consumed in the spell casting, though some are left behind to maintain a spell.
